How skip hire works here

Drop, fill, collect — on your driveway

We run 2.5 m³ / 2.5 ton skipson a hydraulic skip-loader trailer. That size is deliberate. A maxi skip looks like better value until it will not fit down a Gordon's Bay side passage, cannot turn into a Strand townhouse complex, or has to stand half on the pavement while you argue with the body corporate. The 2.5 m³ unit drops onto a normal driveway, clears most security booms, and we simply rotate it as many times as the job needs.

The rhythm is the same every time: you message Cliff with a photo, he quotes, the skip lands where you want it, you fill it at your own pace, and one message brings the truck back.

What one 2.5 m³ skip actually holds

Roughly 25 builder's wheelbarrows. In practical terms that is the tile-and-rubble waste from a single bathroom strip-out, a double garage cleared down to the floor, or a full green-waste cut-back on an average Somerset West garden. If you are not sure, the estimator further down this page will do the maths for you.

Clean loads keep your price down

Skip pricing is driven by what happens at the landfill, not by the container. A clean load — all building rubble, or all garden refuse, or all cardboard and paper — gets tipped in one movement at one gate. A mixed load has to be unpacked by hand and sorted before it is accepted, which is why a R375 sorting fee applies to mixed loads and to anything containing ceramic or porcelain tiles.

The cheapest thing you can do is separate as you fill. Rubble in the skip, green waste in a pile beside it, and we will take both — you just avoid paying someone to separate it later.

Clean loads we take

Three loads that tip straight through

Keep it to one of these and there is no sorting fee at all.

◧

Building rubble

Concrete, brick, plaster, screed, sand and soil. Heavy but straightforward — this is the load the 2.5 ton rating exists for.

❧

Garden refuse

Prunings, grass, hedge cuttings, palm fronds and tree stumps. Goes to green-waste composting rather than landfill.

▤

Cardboard & paper

Move-in boxes, shop packaging, office archives. Light, bulky, and fully recyclable if it stays dry.

Placement

Where the skip can stand

On your own driveway, yard or building site, no permission needed — this is by far the easiest option and the one we recommend. Give us about the length of a bakkie and a half of flat, firm ground, and clear enough overhead space that the trailer arm can swing.

If the only spot is on the road or pavement, that is municipal land and the City of Cape Town treats it as a temporary road reservation. Tell Cliff up front when you message, because it changes how we schedule the drop — and on a narrow Gordon's Bay street it is often faster to do two shorter driveway rotations than to wait on paperwork.

In a complex or estate, check with your body corporate or HOA before booking. Most Helderberg estates are relaxed about a skip standing for a day or two on your own parking bay; a few require notice. We have run jobs in most of them and can usually tell you what to expect.

Not sure a skip is even the right call?

It often is not. If you have one load of stuff you would simply rather not lift, a truck-and-driver collection is usually cheaper — you are not paying for a container to stand around. Skips win when you are filling gradually over days, when the waste is heavy, or when a contractor needs somewhere to throw debris all week. Read the honest comparison in our pricing guide.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

What size skips do you have?
We run 2.5 m³ / 2.5 ton skips. That holds roughly 25 builder's wheelbarrow loads. For larger jobs we rotate the same unit as many times as needed rather than dropping an oversized container — on Helderberg driveways that is usually both cheaper and easier to place.
Do you take mixed loads?
Yes, but a R375 sorting fee applies to mixed loads and to any load containing ceramic or porcelain tiles. The fee covers unpacking and separating the load by hand at the landfill. Keeping your load clean — all rubble, all garden refuse, or all cardboard — avoids it entirely.
How long can I keep the skip?
As long as you reasonably need to fill it. Most domestic jobs run a day or two; renovation sites keep one standing and we swap it when it is full. Message Cliff when you are ready for collection.
Do you deliver outside Gordon's Bay?
Yes. Delivery and collection are included within 10 km of Gordon's Bay, which covers Strand, most of Somerset West and the surrounding Helderberg. Beyond that radius we charge the standard AA / SARS per-kilometre rate, quoted up front before you commit.
What can't go in the skip?
Building glass, household kitchen waste, and medical or hazardous waste cannot go in our skips. We work with a certified hazardous-waste contractor for those loads — ask Cliff and he will quote it separately.
Can you put the skip on the road?
Placing a skip on a public road or pavement is a temporary road reservation and is the City's call, not ours. On your own driveway or yard there is nothing to arrange. Tell Cliff where you are thinking of putting it when you message and he will tell you the quickest route.
How do I pay?
Cash or EFT, settled when the job is done. No invoicing systems to sign up for and no deposits to chase.

How big is your load, really?

Nobody thinks in cubic metres. Everyone can picture a wheelbarrow. Drag the slider to roughly how many barrow loads are sitting there, and we'll tell you what it needs — then send it straight to Cliff.

A builder's wheelbarrow holds about 0.1 m³. Twenty-five of them fill one 2.5 m³ skip.

One 2.5 m³ skip

About 1.8 m³ — comfortably inside one 2.5 m³ skip. Leave it standing while you fill it over a day or two, then message Cliff to collect.
